If you’ve ever noticed one of these machines working along the roadside, you’ve witnessed trenchless technology in action. This innovative method allows us to install pipes and conduits underground without the need for open trenches — faster, cleaner, and less disruptive for communities.

HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING, OR HDD

Our HDD crews use advanced trenchless technology to install pipes and conduits with minimal surface disruption. This method allows us to safely cross under roads, parking areas, and environmentally sensitive zones — keeping businesses and communities fully operational during construction.

HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING

HDD is a trenchless method that allows us to install utilities underground without the need for open excavation. From pipelines to power lines, this technique provides a cleaner, safer, and less disruptive alternative.

HOW HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING WORKS

Despite the name, HDD doesn’t always follow a straight path. The process uses a controlled curved alignment that allows the drill to enter the ground, travel beneath roads, rivers, or existing utilities, and then exit safely on the other side.

PILOT HOLE

The pilot hole is the first step of any HDD project. A small-diameter bore is drilled along the planned path, guided by surface equipment with precise controls. This hole serves as the foundation for all subsequent steps, ensuring accuracy and alignment.

DRILLING FLUID

Drilling fluid, also called mud or slurry, plays a critical role in HDD. It lubricates and cools the drill bit, removes soil and rock cuttings, and stabilizes the borehole — reducing wear on equipment and preventing collapse.

GUIDING THE DRILL PATH

In HDD, the drill head is carefully guided underground to follow a precise curved path. This allows us to safely cross beneath roads, rivers, and existing utilities, and ensures the drill exits at exactly the planned location.

TWO METHODS FOR STEERING THE DRILL

Walkover Locality Device

A handheld receiver reads signals from a transmitter behind the drill bit, allowing crews to track its depth and position from the surface in real time.

Wireline or Gyro System

This system uses magnetic fields or gyroscopes to continuously track the drill bit underground. With precise data on its position, crews can accurately steer the drill to the planned exit point.

Reaming: Enlarging the Path

After the pilot hole is complete, it must be enlarged to fit the pipe. This step, called reaming, uses a specialized tool (the reamer) attached to the drill string. The reamer is pulled back through the pilot hole to gradually widen it. For larger pipes, the process may be repeated in multiple passes until the borehole reaches the required diameter.

The Pullback

In the final stage, known as pullback, the prepared pipe is positioned on rollers at the exit pit and attached to the drill string. Using powerful equipment, the pipe is pulled smoothly through the reamed borehole back toward the drill rig. Once in place, it is connected at both ends and made ready for service.
